Sickness in your glance has already passed into my body,

Till it took the place of slumber in my eyes.

Accursed be the eye's glance that left my body

Invisible, but for groans to those visiting me.

Who will help me with a mistress of estrangement? Her eye's arrows—

Seekers of mail and shields found no protection against them.

She visited; before her appearance, I had never seen at night

The sun of day appear amid the blackness of clouds.

I am love's prophet: this slender bough has come

Walking to me, and this gazelle has spoken to me.

O my reproacher, if slumber visits my eyes, you may count

On my admitting this counsel into my ear.

I will not turn aside from love's path in weariness,

As long as that bough's swaying endures.

May my ambitions never dwell beside Suha's heights in honor,

Nor drink the seas of excellence that spring from insight,

Nor may there recoil before my resolve, on a day of battle,

Beneath the dust-cloud, in cowardice, the might of time,

If I long bear the burden of humiliation in a land

Where hillocks vie in height with the highest peaks.

I shall surely leave the lean camels skeletal, though they once possessed

The restless roaming of one passionately enthralled by glory.

The whip strikes them only head-on,

Checking them as they head toward the sweet pool and watering-ground.

Like bows from exhaustion; I never sought to advance

Without fearing they would fall onto their calloused pads.

My eyes forsake sleep at slumber's hour,

As though the eye were my body, and slumber my homeland.

I fear their death, yet they reveal their strength to me,

As though they had been told of the name of Abu al-Hasan.
