O innovator in reproach, your reproach is idolatry.

Forgive me for the cheek-down from which snares were cast upon me.

Others have their passions, O my reproacher; my passion

is a smiling, perhaps dark-lipped gazelle from the herd of the dunes.

Fine hairs captivate you upon the brocade of his cheek.

Magic has embroidered them, and beauty is their weaver.

By God, beauty is nothing but the beauty of cheek-down.

Look at it and ask me: your own eyes may leave you doubtful.

The tracery of his cheek-down is nothing but good deeds.

O Lord, I hope to meet You with this page.

O full moon of perfection, you came as the seal of the beautiful.

Musk came as the seal upon the beauty of your face.

I swore by a line like lapis lazuli upon a cheek,

like pure gold; the two cheeks adorned it, and it adorned you.

Nothing in you is flawed except your breaking of the pledge.

Do as you will: my heart loves you despite your deeds.

A happy morning to you, who appeared like the dawn!

And good night: your evening comes from your tresses.

Give me more of whatever you wish; then I shall love you more.

How ignorant is one who claims to love you yet hates you!

Once there were you and us, and you were the full moon of our darkness.

Yet today, at how many a crescent moon are we denied the sight of you!

Was it wise for you to break with someone like me,

O beloved, and for your reason to submit to error?

Suppose my watcher is, like me, wasted with longing for you

through your rejection of me; by your worth, I am in that plight.

You apparently quenched the envious man's resentment against me; I think

he would never have been cured of his vexation without you.

I entrusted you with love's sapling, that it might bear affection.

I never hoped that enmity would be your harvest.

If this is the punishment of one who loves you,

I would ransom you—tell me, what have you left for your enemies?

I am shunned, though I am your nightingale; it is shameful

that you heed my reproacher's echo and your ears take delight.

Do not heed the claims of others, for they are not alike:

the one who misleads you with false claims, and the one enamored of you.

Had you been fair, you would have known that I am

your lovesick one; each of them is lovesick for you to spite me.

O branch, if you persist in refusing to bend to my reproach,

no wonder—I am excused for making my complaint against you public.

I shall complain of you to one whose favor kings seek,

who surpassed all mankind through his pure lineage.

An imam descended from Abu Bakr, the imam,

a mainstay of nobility, virtue, and guidance.

The exalted one—I mean Abu al-Mawahib, a patron

who greets you with cheer and generosity throughout all time.

Seek him: you will find a sea overflowing from his hands.

No withholding dries up the clouds of his fingers.

Draw bounty through him, hold fast, and take him as a sword.

Abu al-Mawahib makes every other sword needless for you.

If you come to him afraid, while you are devoted,

then surely the lions of the lair will not shun you.

O sea of pearls, O cloud of bounty,

blessed is the loyal follower who came to you and pledged allegiance.

My lord, pardon my stumble, for there is none to pardon it—

my beloved has forsaken me and my patience waned—except you.

Who is like you, son of noble men? Noble is your stock,

and your glory has grown; give more, and your Lord will increase you.

God has made you rise as a full moon among your people.

May you ever shine through them, with them as your heavenly spheres.

A sword of yours quivers in both states,

in giving and in strife, deadly as your forefather's sword.

O offspring of that imam who excelled, may you be granted success!

If my praise of you falls short, my inability itself is understanding.

Praise avails nothing except to gain access to you.

You are the pearls of the universe, and praises are their strings.

May there ever rest upon the master of mankind and upon you

the purest blessings from the Source of Peace, borne by angels,

as long as love's secret escapes a lover's heart

in distress, and kings are humbled by love.
