My God, I have made poetry my wares,

and it has come to count the years in my keeping.

And why not, when its market has fallen into ruin,

like the ruins of its masters of old?

And poetry must have a provider—

so woe to whoever seeks out the miserly!

For them I pluck from the garden of my poetry,

    then scatter roses over sleepers.

So, O Provider of the worlds, grant me sufficiency,

by Your bounty, so I need not seek out the world's people.

So here I am, a poet standing

at Your door, O most generous of the generous!
