All the parasangs, the miles of the wilderness, and the postal stages—
All the miles and leagues of land and sea
I crossed them and folded up the earth as one folds a cloak.
I traversed, and folded the earth like a cloth,

And my aim was a draught from dusky lips, [perhaps: O you with] rosy cheeks.
Seeking the smile of the beloved, and those rosy cheeks,
You spurned me, while the foes receive affection every hour.
You turned me away, though my enemies visit you each hour in friendship.
