Youth has come to a halt, yet you follow its folly.
You do not desist at the warning of gray hair, though it has admonished you.

Oh, the ignorance of your heart, its good sense left idle!
If only its good sense had approached its folly, or matched it!

The lands of fear now slam their gate
Against me; my limit now lies short of them.

They left the burning thirst of longing within my ribs
In fragments; then counted how it had been, and guided her [wording unclear].

Love and passionate grief have worn out the thread of his tears;
So whenever thought's confidant stirs it, it gives way.

Good fortune passed; I had not known its worth
Until it ended; I recognized it only when it ended.

I squandered it half-asleep, floundering through deep waters
With my hand; then Time awakened it and gave warning.

Nothing equals the days that passed with their pleasures;
Unappreciated, they gave my heart whatever it desired.

So now gray hair has admonished me and spoken out.

So now Time has lifted its veil
Before my inward sight; I have settled in the house of reason.

And I delighted, among the soul's pleasures, in a graceful maiden
Whose singing echoes the lovesick doves.

A wasting invalid who nodded his head, then moaned [uncertain reading].

Which have known no torment of tears to draw them forth.

Yet when praise's orator addresses him, he grows inattentive.

Whoever draws your sword for ingratitude has already weakened.

The giving of lavish gifts that wins people the greatest praise.
