When the horizon split open with radiance,

Like the smile of a dusky lip,

And the tresses of darkness turned gray,

And the star of night was about to doze,

We led, into the sight of wild beasts and gazelles,

A scourge whose encounter was dreaded,

With tail raised like a brown scorpion,

    Slender, loose-bellied,

Like an even stroke drawn by a pen,

Or a fringe-thread from the edge of a cloak.

    تَستَلِبُ الخَطوَ بِلا إِبطاءِ

    The wings of the air carry her;

She snatches up her strides without delay.

And a lean one, firmly knit in his limbs,

Contrasting with her in his white hide,

Like a meteor's trail in the sky.

And he distinguishes a rebuke from a call

With an ear drooping at the edges,

    Like the bloom of a bluish-gray iris;

    With a claw like a shoe-piercing awl,

And an eye with scarcely any grit,

Clear as a drop of water.

It glides between the desert's hillocks,

Like the gliding of a speckled snake.

He spotted, between the slope and the open expanse,

A herd of gazelles, their fawns grazing freely,

In a remote, flowering, empty tract,

    فيهِ كَنَقشِ الحَيَّةِ الرَقشاءِ

    Dark green as the belly of a green snake;

In it are patterns like a mottled snake's,

As though they were a gray-haired woman's braids.

He catches, before weariness and toil,

    Fifty, no fewer when counted,

And sold us flesh in exchange for blood.

O champion of despair over hope,

You cast the earth toward the sky,

And hit nothing, casting into the air.

So let this suffice us, after so much toil:

There—this cast with the son of water.
