نِ وَقَد كُنتُ راجِياً لِلتَلاقي
What kept me from seeing the two ministers—
Without seeing the vizier or his assistant
though I had hoped for a meeting—
Though I had hoped for a meeting

was a long illness that never leaves my body,
A lingering illness does not leave my body
its umbilical cord coiled, its bonds tight.
Its secret firmly bound

When I hoped for a meeting close at hand,
When I hoped for a gathering in this abode
Time subtly contrived to prolong our separation.
Fate was gentle in the permanence of separation
