عَرِّجturn aside عَلىto الدارِthe dwelling الَّتيwhich كُنّاwe were بِهاin it
تَغَيَّرَتhas changed مِنfrom بَعدِafter عَهدِناour time بِهاin it
Turn aside to the dwelling where we once stayed.
Pass by the house we once inhabited
It has changed since our time there,
It has changed since we lived in it
غَيرَexcept ثَلاثٍthree لَمnot تَزَلyou cease تَشقىyou suffer بِهاbecause of them
كَنُقَطِlike the dots of الثاءِthe letter thāʾ لَدىwith كُتّابِهاits scribes
Save three that still make you suffer,
Except for three, it was always miserable
Like the dots of thāʾ in its scribes’ hands.
Like the dot under the letter thaa with its scribes
تَنَفَّسَتbreathed بَعدَafter الكَرىslumber الصَباthe east wind بِهاthrough it
وَاِنتَقَبَand veiled himself المُسفِرُthe bright-faced one مِنof تُرابِهاits dust
After slumber, the east wind breathed through it,
It took a deep breath after distress, with youthfulness in it
And the bright-faced one donned a veil of its dust.
And the dawn wiped off the dust from it
وَاِهتَزَّand stirred فيهاin it النَورُthe blossoms وَالنَقاand the sand dunes بِهاin it
حينَwhen تَرىyou see الكَمِيَّthe armored warrior إِذas يُعنىhe is concerned بِهاwith it
And the blossoms and sand dunes stirred within it,
Light and clarity shook in it
When you see the armored warrior attending to it.
When the professional took care of it
وَالصُدقُand truth لاnot يُعرَفُis known مِنfrom غُرابِهاits raven
كَغادَةٍlike a graceful maiden عَزَّتwas unattainable عَلىto طُلّابِهاher suitors
And truth cannot be learned from its raven.
And truth cannot be recognized from its covering
Like a graceful maiden beyond her suitors’ reach,
Like an inaccessible beloved to her seekers
غالِيَةِcostly الوَصلِunion عَلىto أَحبابِهاher lovers
ساخِطَةٍdispleased قَدindeed رَضِيَwas pleased الهَوىlove بِهاwith her
Whose union costs her lovers dearly,
Expensive to reach for her loved ones
Displeased, yet love is pleased with her.
Angry, though desire was pleased with her
تَلتَهِبُblaze البيضُthe white swords عَلىat أَبوابِهاher gates
وَغَمرَةٌand a surge لِلمَوتِof death تُتَّقىis warded off بِهاwith them
The white blades blaze at her gates,
The white days blaze at her doors
And a surge of death is warded off with them.
And a flood of death to be feared in her
حَضَّرتُهاI prepared it وَكُنتُand I was مِنamong أَصحابِهاits participants
فَطارَتِthen flew الهاماتُthe heads عَنfrom رِقابِهاtheir necks
I prepared it, and I was among its participants,
I prepared it and was one of its owners
Then heads flew from their necks.
Necks were free of worries in it
وَناقَةٍand a she-camel فيin مَهمَهٍa trackless waste رَمىflung بِهاher
هَمٌّworry إِذاwhen نامَslept الوَرىhumankind سَرىjourneyed by night بِهاwith her
And a she-camel, flung into a trackless waste
And a she-camel roaming freely in it
By worry, which journeyed with her by night when humankind slept.
A care, roving when people sleep
فَهيَso she أَمامَahead of الرَكبِthe caravan فيin ذَهابِهاher going
كَسَطرِlike the line بِسمِin the name of اللَهِGod فيin كِتابِهاher book
So she is ahead of the caravan as she goes,
She’s ahead of the caravan in her departure
Like the line ‘In the name of God’ in her book.
Like lines beginning with “In the name of God” in their scripture
