There is no hunting except with a bowstring,

    Yellow, braided, tightly twisted.

If the archer touches it, it snorts,

With an eye that weeps clay clods.

    دامَ عَليها فَمَهَر

    A capable carver's handiwork;

He persisted at it and grew skilled.

So they came out like balls,

They did not differ in shape,

    In smallness or in largeness:

    Clay most like stone.

They are placed in navel-like hollows,

    Then fly like sparks

    Toward hearts and throat hollows.

When they went forth before dawn,

    And night's forelocks were black,

Taking some ground and leaving some,

And dawn appeared and became clear,

They came in ranks and bands,

    Crossing rightward, white of brow,

    Seeking what fate had willed:

A fresh meadow and a river.

    And they asked their sight

    فَقامَ رامٍ فَاِبتَدَر

    What news it held.

    Then an archer stood up and hastened;

He strung a bow and bared his arm.

Whenever he shot at the rank, it scattered.

He made a snorting wooden stave a terror.

    So, some fell, plunging down,

And some cried out in peril,

And some had a broken wing.

And he rejoiced at his fine success,

And the jinn of wanton exultation touched him.

And they said, when the effect was clear,

And the shooting grew fierce and went on:

This is not how mortals shoot!

The earth's pebbles have become clay clods!
