لاno عُذرَexcuse لِلعاذِلِfor the reproacher فيconcerning الكاسِthe cup
فَماfor ... not أَرىI see فيin الكاسِthe cup مِنany باسِharm
The reproacher of the cup has no excuse,
The blamer has no excuse for blaming the wine cup
For I see no harm in the cup.
For I see no evil in the cup
وَيليwoe to me مِنَfrom الناسِpeople وَمِنand from لَومِهِمtheir blame
ماwhat لَقِيَhave suffered الناسُpeople مِنَfrom الناسِpeople
Woe to me from people and their blame!
Woe to me from people and their blaming
What people have suffered at people's hands!
People have never suffered from people
مُهَفهَفِslender الخَصرِthe waist هَضيمِslim الحَشاthe belly
مُشَوَّقٍstirred to longing بِالوَعدِby the promise مَكّاسِa hard bargainer
Slender of waist, slim of belly,
With a slender waist and sunken eyes
Stirred to longing by a promise, a hard bargainer,
Yearning for the promise, passing the cup
وَقامَand stood فيon العاتِقِthe shoulder مَنديلُهُhis kerchief
يُديرُhe passes around كَأساًa cup بَينَamong جُلّاسِseated companions
And his kerchief rested on his shoulder,
His scarf wrapped around his neck
He passes a cup among seated companions.
Circling a cup amongst boon companions
وَيَدخُلُand he enters الآذانَthe ears مِنfrom أَمسِهِhis yesterday
مِنfrom تَحتِbeneath إِكليلٍa wreath مِنَof الآسِmyrtle
And he enters the ears from his yesterday [wording unclear],
Penetrating ears since last night
From beneath a wreath of myrtle.
Under a wreath of myrtle
وَشَمَّرَand tucked up الذَيلَthe hem إِلىto خَصرِهِhis waist
وَحَثَّناand urged us بِالرَطلِwith the ratl-measure وَالكاسِand the cup
And he tucked the hem up to his waist,
He tucked up his garment to his waist
And urged us on with the ratl-measure and the cup.
And urged us on with flagon and cup
وَطالَماand for so long عَذَّبَنيtormented me هَجرُهُhis abandonment
وَوَكَّلَand consigned القَلبَthe heart بِوِسواسِto anxious whispers
And long had his abandonment tormented me,
Long has his estrangement tormented me
And consigned my heart to anxious whispers.
Afflicting my heart with disquieting thoughts
لَمّاwhen أَتَتنيcame to me رُسُلُهhis messengers بِالرِضاwith favor
I was made to forget ماwhat مَرَّhad passed عَلىover راسيmy head
When his messengers came to me bearing his favor,
When his messengers brought me reconciliation
I was made to forget what had passed over my head.
I forgot all that had passed
وَلَمand did not أَزَلcease وَاللَيلُwhile the night سُترٌa veil لَناfor us
مِنfrom دونِin front of رُقابٍwatchers وَحُرّاسِand guards
And I kept on, while the night was a veil for us,
And I have not ceased, while the night cloaks us
Against watchers and guards,
With no overseers or guards
أَشكوI complain إِلىto غَمزَةِthe wink of عَينَيهِhis eyes ماwhat
قاسَيتُهُI endured it مِنfrom قَلبِهِhis heart القاسيcruel
Complaining to the wink of his eyes of what
To complain to the glances of his eyes for what
I had endured from his cruel heart,
I suffered from his cruel heart
فيin لَيلَةٍa night ماnot مِثلَهاlike it لَيلَةٌa night
لَستُI am not لَهاof it ماas long as عِشتُI live بِالناسيat all forgetful
On a night with no other night like it—
On a night the like of which no night ever was
I shall not forget it as long as I live.
As long as I live among people
