أَضافَadded إِلَيَّto me اللَيلُthe night طولَlength of تَفَكُّرِreflection
وَهَمّاًand sorrow مَتىwhenever يُستَمطَرِis summoned as rain الدَمعُtears يَقطُرُdrip
The night brought me prolonged brooding,
The night has added to me the length of contemplation
And sorrow—whenever tears are called down like rain, they drip.
And worry - when will tears begin to pour down?
وَقالَand said الغَوانيthe beautiful women قَدindeed تَنَكَّرتَyou have changed بَعدَناafter us
وَهَلand has? دامَendured ذوone possessing عَهدٍa pledge فَلَمand did not يَتَنَكَّرِchange
And the beautiful women said, 'You have changed since we parted.'
And the lovesick said, "You've changed after us."
And has anyone bound by a pledge endured without changing?
Yet, does one who makes a pact not change?
تَعاوَدَتِrepeatedly revisited الأَسقامُillnesses جِسميmy body فَلَمand did not تَدَعleave
لِعُوّادِهِfor its visitors غَيرَother than القَميصِthe shirt المُزَرَّرِbuttoned
Illnesses kept returning to my body, leaving
Illnesses have recurred in my body, leaving
Nothing for its visitors but the buttoned shirt.
Nothing for the visitor except the embroidered shirt.
أَلاah! رُبَّmany a كَأسٍa cup قَدindeed سَبَقتُI hastened ahead لِشُربِهاto drink it
صَباحاًat dawn كَبازٍlike a hawk هَمَّintended بِالنَهضِto take flight أَقمَرِwhite
Ah, many a cup I have hastened to drink
Indeed, many a cup I have preceded in drinking
At dawn, like a white hawk poised to take flight.
In the morning, like a splendid star inclined to rise.
وَقَدand already صَغَتِtilted الجَوزاءُOrion حَتّىuntil كَأَنَّهاas though it were
وَراءَbehind نُجومٍstars هاوِياتٍfalling وَغُوَّرِand setting
And Orion had tilted until it seemed,
And the Pleiades have inclined until it is as though they are
Behind stars falling and setting,
Beyond falling stars in an abyss.
صُنوجٌcymbals عَلىon رَقّاصَةٍa female dancer قَدalready تَمايَلَتshe swayed
لِتُلهِيَto entertain شَرباًdrinkers بَينَamid دُفٍّa tambourine وَمِزهَرِand a lute
Like cymbals on a dancer who swayed
Delicate and graceful upon a swaying litter,
To entertain drinkers amid tambourine and lute.
Amusing themselves between a tambourine and blossoms.
وَقُلتُand I said لِساقِto the pourer of الراحِwine لاdo not تَعقِرَنَّهاslay it
بِماءٍwith water وَأَحزاناًand sorrows بِصِرفِكَwith your unmixed wine فَاِعقِرِthen slay
And I said to the wine-pourer, 'Do not slay it
And I said to the leg of the wind, "Do not uproot it
With water; but slay sorrows with your unmixed wine.
With water and sorrows with your blowing - uproot!"
وَلاand do not تَسقِنيهاgive it to me to drink بِنتَa daughter of عامٍa year فَإِنَّهاfor it
كَماas هِيَit فيin عُنقودِهاits cluster لَمhas not تَغَيَّرِchanged
And do not serve it to me only a year old, for it
"And do not water me this year's wine, for it
Is still as it was in its cluster, unchanged—
Is as it is on the cluster - it has not changed."
قَريبَةُrecent عَهدٍacquaintance بِالغُصونِwith the branches وَبِالثَرىand with the soil
وَبِالشُربِand with drinking مِنfrom ماءِthe water of الفُراتِthe Euphrates المُفَجَّرِmade to gush forth
Still fresh from the branches and the soil,
Recently plucked from the branches and from the earth
And from drinking the Euphrates' gushing water.'
And from drinking the flowing Euphrates' water.
وَلَيلٍand many a night مُوَشّىembroidered بِالنُجومِwith stars صَدَعتُهُI tore it
إِلىto صُبحِهِits dawn صَدعَa rending of الرِداءِthe robe المُحَبَّرِpatterned
And many a night embroidered with stars I rent,
And a night embroidered with stars - I've torn it
Through to its dawn, as one rends a patterned robe.
Until its dawn - torn like an embroidered cloak.
وَياand O حاسِداًenvier يَكويsears التَلَهُّفُbitter regret قَلبَهُhis heart
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle رَآهُhe sees him عادِياًcharging وَسطَamid عَسكَرِan army
And O envier, whose heart bitter regret sears,
And oh envier, whose heart is scorched by yearning,
Whenever he sees him charging amid an army,
When he sees him riding amidst an army.
تَصَفَّحexamine بَنيthe sons of الدُنياthis world فَهَلso is there? فيهُمُamong them لَهُfor him
نَظيرٌan equal تَراهُyou see him وَاِجتَهِدand strive وَتَفَكَّرِand ponder
Survey the sons of this world: has he among them
Peruse the people of this world, is there for him
An equal you can see? Strive and ponder.
A peer you see? Strive and ponder.
