بانَdeparted الخَليطُthe companions وَلَمand did not يُطِقhave strength to endure صَبراpatiently
وَوَجَدتُand I found طَعمَthe taste فِراقِهِمof parting from them مُرّاbitter
The companions departed, and patience failed.
The blend has cleared, and I could not bear patience,
And I found the taste of parting from them bitter.
And I found the taste of their separation bitter,
وَكَأَنَّماand as though الأَمطارُthe rains بَعدَهُمُafter them
كَسَتِclothed الطُلولُthe campsite ruins غَلائِلاًlight robes خُضراgreen
And it was as though the rains, after their departure,
And it is as if the rains after them
Had clothed the campsite ruins in green robes.
Are the washing of the meadows, green garments.
هَلdo تَذكُرينَyou remember وَأَنتِand you ذاكِرَةٌremembering

مَشيَthe walking الرَسولِof the messenger إِلَيكُمُto you all سِرّاsecretly
Do you remember—and you do remember—
Do you remember, while you remember,
The messenger's secret walk to you?
The Prophet's secret walk to you?
أَنif يَغفَلواthey are heedless يُسرِعhe hastens لِحاجَتِهِon his errand
وَإِذاand when رَأوهُthey saw him أَحسَنَmade good العُذراthe excuse
If they were heedless, he hurried on his errand;
That they are heedless, he hastens to his need,
And when they saw him, he made a good excuse.
And when they see him, he makes the best excuse.
فَطِنٌastute يُؤَدّيhe conveys ماwhat يُقالُis said لَهُto him
وَيَزيدُand he adds بَعضَsome of حَديثِناour talk سِحراenchantment
Astute, he conveyed what was said to him,
Clever, he performs what is said to him,
And added enchantment to some of our words.
And adds to some of our talk magic.
قالَتshe said لِأَترابٍto female peers خَلَونَwere alone بِهاwith her

She said to her peers, who were alone with her,
She said to intimates who were alone with her,
And wept, her tears wetting her upper chest:
And she wept, so her tears wet the bosom.

“What ails him? He has broken off our union and has not
What is with him? He cut off the connection and did not
Allowed a visit between us for a month.
Allow a visit between us for a month.
ياoh لَيتُهُif only he فيin مَجلِسٍa gathering مَعَناwith us

Oh, if only he were at a gathering with us,
If only he were in a gathering with us,
We could complain to him of distance and abandonment.”
We would complain to him of the estrangement and separation.
حَتّىuntil طَرَقتُI visited by night عَلىat مُخاطَرَةٍrisk
أَطَأُI tread upon الصَوارِمَthe sharp swords وَالقَناand the spears السُمراbrown
Until I came by night, braving danger,
Until I knocked on an adventure
Treading upon sharp swords and brown spears.
That mounts swords and spears and arrows.
ياoh لَيلَةًa night ماhow كانَwas أَقصَرَهاbrief it was
لاmay not زِلتُI cease أَشكُرُI thank بَعدَهاafter it الدَهراTime
Oh, what a night—how brief it was!
O night, how short it was!
May I never cease thanking Time thereafter.
I still thank fate after it.
