أَهدَتshe sent as a gift إِلَيَّto me صَحيفَةًa letter مَكتوبَةًwritten
أَهدَت إِلَيَّ صَحيفَةً مَكتوبَةً
أَرضَتshe appeased بِهاwith it سُخطَthe anger of الضَميرِthe heart العاتِبِreproachful
أَرضَت بِها سُخطَ الضَميرِ العاتِبِ
She sent me a written letter;
She gave me a written paper
With it she appeased the anger of my reproachful heart.
With which she pleased the angry conscience
ياoh لَيتَنيif only I ضُمِّنتُI was enclosed طَيَّwithin the folds of جَوابِهاthe reply to it
يا لَيتَني ضُمِّنتُ طَيَّ جَوابِها
حَتّىso that أُقَبِّلَI may kiss كَفَّthe hand of ذاكَthat الكاتِبِthe writer
حَتّى أُقَبِّلَ كَفَّ ذاكَ الكاتِبِ
If only I were enclosed within the folds of the reply to it,
Oh how I wish I was placed in the folds of her reply
So that I might kiss the hand of that writer.
So I could kiss the hand of that writer
