ياO مَنone who يَجودُgenerously gives بِمَوعِدٍa promised meeting مِنfrom حَظِّهِhis share
وَيَصُدُّand turns away حينَwhen أَقولُI say أَينَwhere المَوعِدُthe promised meeting
O you who generously promise a meeting to your own advantage,
O you who makes promises of favors
And turn away when I say, “Where is the promised meeting?”
Yet withdraws when I ask, where is the promise?
وَيَظَلُّand remains صَبّاغُthe dyer الحَياءِof bashfulness بِخَدِّهِon his cheek
تَعِباًweary يُعَصفِرُdyes with safflower تارَةًat one time وَيُوَرِّدُand makes rose-red
And the dyer of bashfulness on your cheek remains
Modesty's dyer stays blushing in his cheek
Weary, dyeing it now with safflower, now rose-red.
Tired, at times turning yellow, at others turning red
ماذاwhat يَضُرُّكَharms you لَوif رَثيتَyou took pity لِعاشِقٍon a lover
قَلَقٍrestless يَقومُstands up بِهِwith him هَواكَlove for you وَيَقعُدُand sits down
What harm would it do you to pity a lover,
What harm would it do you to console a lover
Restless, whom love for you makes stand and sit?
Restless, roused and rested by his passion for you?
تَجِدُfind العُيونُthe eyes رُقادَهاtheir sleep وَرُقادَهُand his sleep
حَتّىuntil الصَباحِmorning مَسَرَّةٌa joy لاnot توجَدُis found
Eyes find their sleep, but his sleep
Eyes find their sleep and his sleep
Until morning is a joy that cannot be found.
Till dawn a pleasure not to be found
وَلَهُand for him إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle قَصَّرَshortens اللَيلُthe night الكَرىslumber

And when slumber shortens the night, he has
And when the hated night grows short for him
A long-lived night that has no hand.
He has a long-lived night that has no end
