ياO قَومُpeople إِنّيindeed I مُرَزّاafflicted by loss
وَكُلُّand every حُرٍّnoble man مُرَزّاafflicted by loss
O people, indeed I am afflicted by loss,
O people, I am debased
And every noble man is afflicted by loss.
And every free man is debased
خَرجٌexpenditure كَثيرٌgreat وَدَخلٌand income
نَزرٌscant فَلِمso why لاnot أُعَزّىI am consoled
Expenditure is great, and income
Much outgoing and little incoming
Is scant—so why am I not consoled?
Scant, so why am I not consoled?
فَالحَرجُfor hardship لاnot يَتَناهىcomes to an end
وَالدَخلُand income لاnot يَتَجَزّاis divisible
For hardship has no end,
For obligations are endless
And income cannot be divided.
And income is never sufficient
