O our nearest cousins, of the house of Talib,

Come to what is nearer, and return to what is best.

Are not the sons of al-Abbas your father's own kin,

The keepers of his confidences and his closest companions?

And al-Ma'mun pledged you succession to the caliphate,

Ours by right—yet he freely gave away the world,

To show you that what you had so eagerly yearned

For—and in whose pursuit you were left slain—

Is easy for him to lose, without making much of it,

As befits the righteous, those possessed of piety.

Then al-Rida died, after what you already know,

And after him it sought refuge with us once more.

And it returned to us as a lover returns

To a homeland where he has all that he desires.

Leave us and our world, which is enamored of us,

Just as we have left you and your former world.
