O my friend, I have grown gray unawares,

And drunk a clear draught mingled with murk.

I was given cups of love,

And found them bitter and sweet.

A gazelle openly proclaims his aversion,

Haughty over my abasement, and cruel.

He filled the heart with anguish

That gripped it, while he was free of love.

Alas for the days of youth,

    Utterly erased from the world.

Times when I reached, in my desires,

Their farthest bounds, in merriment and play.

Days when my lapse was forgiven,

And deliberate sin was deemed an oversight.

He would come to me in the morning with his cup—

    A dark-hued gazelle-fawn with languid eyes.

The scorpion-curls at his temple were filled

With musk upon his cheeks, packed full.

And it was as though his eyelids

Were plaintively complaining to you of sickness.

Among young men whom I sent ahead

Before me, and found no equal to replace them.

They became anguish in the heart, grieving

    It—and sorrows and heartache.

Ask a shower of rain for the dwellings,

And the campsite and the two monasteries, lying deserted,

    Until its grounds remain

Pale and flower-bright, and darkly green.

And the wings of the plants are stirred

By its breeze, which murmurs proudly.

Of every way of life I have tasted

Its sweetness, and pursued a course

In youth's season; I drew back my hand

    Afterward, and shortened my stride.

    Gray hair unsheathed its swords,

    Then fiercely assailed the pleasures,

Until youth's sharp point bent back,

Blunted, and I became fully sober.

And indeed I faced a great ordeal,

A dreaded one, and bore a burden.

And strode proudly in shirts of iron,

And saw no light in the night,

    On a swift, far-ranging she-camel

That utterly exhausts the caravan's mounts.

A man's ambitions journeyed with her,

And her staying amid worry was worse.

He signaled to her with the reins,

So she spared no speed in her charge.

And I have stripped the dawn

Of its darkness, before daybreak and in the morning,

On a supple steed full of youthful vigor,

Leaping vigorously ahead of the horses,

In pursuit of a night-traveling cloud, whose

    Light penetrated lowlands and heights.

It was slaughtered upon the pure soil,

By streams of its downpour, which quenched the earth.
