O lote-tree of the valley, by the sweet watering place,

May rain water you, bringing earth to life and drought to death.

I would be false to love if I did not stop to complain of love

To you, even if the road grew long for my companions.

I stood beside it while dawn plundered the darkness

With its rays, and the star raced in the west.

I try to hold back the first tears, for my eye

Is laden with tears, bucketful upon bucketful.

And is it anything but a wish fulfilled for us,

And reproach we bore in obedience to love?

I have traded youth for gray hair; and if they take flight,

The demons of my pleasures alight nearby.
