O friend, I bade farewell to beautiful women and youth,

And followed a path other than theirs.

And bent the necks of desire toward the heights,

And saw that the lovers' course was long.

So I heeded reason's admonition; then gathered together

Were your eye's words, and it turned back in chains.

Two ages have died: those of maidens and youth.

So mourn them both, but do not mourn for long.

They carried away life's sweetness and left no hope

Of returning or hastening a change.

For youth's night at my hair's parting, I was given

Reason's dawn—how welcome that is as a replacement!

But my heart, when the young gazelle turns

Away from me, is haunted by sorrow and burning longing.

And many a night whose eyelids never dry

Of tears casts curtains over itself.

Its stars died, and its full moon became

Ailing on the horizon, its life in doubt.

It crept through us in a north-wind-cooled flood,

Until we imagined morning was late afternoon.

Yellow wine—you would think it, whenever poured,

Gold held dissolved within its cup.

Welcome to the imam, welcome and greetings!

If only I could find a way to meet him.

He takes no vigilance as his mount, nor at evening is his

    Eye painted with sleep's kohl-stick.

And many a man who tucked up his skirts on battle's day—

The dust-scattering winds dragged their skirts over him.
