ماnot باتَspent the night صَبٌّa lovesick lover بِمِثلِlike ماwhat بِتّاyou spent the night
ما باتَ صَبٌّ بِمِثلِ ما بِتّا
ياO هَجرَestrangement شَرٍّevil لَوif شِئتَyou wished أَقسَرتاyou coerced
يا هَجرَ شَرٍّ لَو شِئتَ أَقسَرتا
No lovesick lover spent a night like the one you spent.
No morning has dawned like the dawn when we parted
O evil estrangement, had you wished, you would have coerced.
O evil separation, had you wished you could have been brief
رَوَّحتَyou gave respite مِنfrom حُبِّهاlove for her مُنافِقُهُits hypocrite
رَوَّحتَ مِن حُبِّها مُنافِقُهُ
وَكُلَّماand whenever تُبتَyou repented مِنof هَوىًa passion عُدتاyou returned
وَكُلَّما تُبتَ مِن هَوىً عُدتا
You gave love’s hypocrite respite from loving her.
The hypocrite among us has turned away from loving her
And whenever you repented of a passion, you returned.
And whenever I decide to give up passion, it returns to me
