My sleep has fled, and recurring sorrow has revisited my heart.

And intense grief has denied me slumber.

Great is my suffering, and scant my patience; within my

heart are wounds, and sleeplessness fills my eyelids.

Sleeplessness tears open my eyelids, and fires

blaze; my heart is their fuel.

My companion reproached me, though my heart is lovesick.

How far what I want is from what he wants!

I have been turned gray—not by age,

but by worries coming one after another, and a rebellious age.

So you see me like a metal sheet, refined

by repeated rubbing as it is polished.

Where are my brothers, to whom I once gave

my sincere love, each of them devoted to me?

The hand of calamities scattered them; and the days,

after their gathering, have meant dispersal.

    So they—and I among them—have become

like bark from which the wood has been pulled.

Can the world, which came toward us for a time

then turned away, though we did not turn away,

return—or is there no return for us?

Then forget it, for everything perishes.

Often there came round to us with aged wine

    a soldier, swaying like a bān-tree bough.

    I drink a thirst-quenching draught from the

cup, my gaze bound to his.

O you who ask me about the purest lineage,

beyond which no one has greater distinction:

We are the Messenger's family and his true kindred,

and his close relations—what, then, do you want?

And ours is all on which dawn has shone,

and which night's dark signs have reached.

    ثاً فَمَن ذا عَنّا بِفَخرٍ يَحيدُ

    And we inherited full possession of the imamate;

so who can turn away from us with a boast?

And our forefather was the Prophet's protector, when

those you know fled, while he warded off attack.

That was the day a repulse swept through the host

at Hunayn, while the furnace had fuel.

Among them was one of us who concealed his faith,

while Pharaoh and the troops were unaware.

The people's messengers, when they all force-fed medicine,

except him—how was the dosed man judged superior?
