صَحاsobered up عاذِليmy reprover عَنّيfrom me وَلَمand did not أَصحُI sober up مِنfrom ضَلّيmy folly
وَياand oh حَبَّذاhow delightful شُرٌّShurr عَلىin المَنعِwithholding وَالبَذلِand giving
My reprover has sobered up and left me be, but I have not sobered from my folly.
My lover blamed me, though I was not to blame for my misguidance,
And oh, how delightful Shurr is, whether withholding or giving!
Oh, how I wish that stinginess and withholding were a worse evil!
وَهَبتُI gave لَهاto her قَلبيmy heart فَلاso do not تَطلُبواseek (you all) دَميmy blood
وَلَيسَand there is not عَلَيهاupon her مِنany فِداءٍransom وَلاand no قَتلِexecution
I gave her my heart, so seek no vengeance for my blood.
I gave her my heart, so do not seek my blood,
And she is liable for neither ransom nor execution.
She owes me no redemption or murder.
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see مِثلَthe like of العاذِلينَthe reprovers عَلىfor الهَوىlove
جَعَلتُI made لَهُمfor them شُغلاًa preoccupation وَخَلّاهُمُand left them alone شُغليmy preoccupation
And I have never seen the like of those who reproach one for love:
I have not seen the like of blamers in passion,
I gave them a preoccupation, while my own preoccupation left them alone.
I have left them to their own devices and tended my own,
خَليلَيَّmy two friends طوفاgo around (you two) بِالمُدامِwith the wine وَبادِراand hasten (you two)
بَقيَّةَthe remainder عُمريmy life وَالسَلامُand peace عَلىupon مِثليthose like me
My two friends, pass the wine around, and hasten to seize
My friend, go around with wine and take the initiative,
What remains of my life—and peace be upon those like me.
The rest of my life, and peace be upon the likes of me,
أَلاbehold إِنَّهاindeed it is جِسميmy body لِروحِfor a soul مَطِيَّةٌa mount
وَلاand no بُدَّescape يَوماًone day أَنthat تَعَرّىbecome bare مِنَof الرَحلِthe saddle
Behold, my body is indeed a mount for a soul,
Behold, it is my body to the soul of one who rides freely,
And one day it must be stripped of its saddle.
One day it must be stripped of its trappings,
وَياعاذِليand O my reprover هَلّاwhy not اِشتَغَلتَyou occupied yourself بِسامِعٍwith a listener
كَماjust as أَناI مَشغولٌoccupied بِكَأسيwith my cup عَنِaway from العَذلِreproach
And O my reprover, why not occupy yourself with someone who listens,
And O' you who blame me, why not be busy with one who listens
Just as I am occupied with my cup, heedless of reproach?
As I am busy with my cup, heedless of blame?
