لَقَدindeed شُدَّwas strengthened مُلكَthe rule of بَنيthe sons of هاشِمٍHashim
وَأَبدَلَهُand gave it in exchange بِالفَسادِin place of corruption الصَلاحاrighteousness
Indeed, the rule of the sons of Hashim was strengthened,
The rule of the Banu Hashim was strengthened
and given righteousness in place of corruption,
And its corruption was replaced with righteousness
إِمامٌan imam أَعادَrestored الهُدىguidance عَدلُهُhis justice
وَلاقىand found بِهِthrough him المُرتَجونَthe hopeful نَجاحاsuccess
by an imam whose justice restored guidance,
An Imam whose justice restored guidance
and through whom the hopeful found success.
And through it the hopeful found success
تَحورُturn عَلىupon الدَهرِTime أَحكامُهُhis decrees
وَيَأخُذُand he takes ماwhatever شاءَhe wishes مِنهُfrom it اِقتِراحاat will
His decrees turn upon Time,
The passage of time is subject to his rulings
and he takes from it whatever he wishes, at will.
And he takes from it whatever proposal he wishes
وَرَدَّand he brought back عَلِيّاًAli إِلىto قُربِهِcloseness to him
كَماjust as رَدَّdrew back بازٍa falcon إِلَيهِto itself جَناحاa wing
And he brought Ali back to his side,
He returned Ali to his proximity
as a falcon draws a wing back to itself.
As a falcon returns to it its wing
وَماand not زالَceased يَسهَرُkeeps vigil مِنout of جَدِّهِhis earnestness
وَيُتبِعُهُand follows it with الحَزمَresolve حَتّىuntil اِستَراحاhe rested
And he never ceased keeping vigil in his earnest striving,
He remains sleepless due to his diligence
and coupled it with resolve until he found rest.
And prudence pursues it until it finds rest
وَيَعفوand he pardons وَيَصفَحُand forgives عَنwith regard to مَعشَرٍa group of people
وَيَخضِبُand he dyes مِنfrom آخَرينَothers السِلاحاthe weapons
And he pardons and forgives some people,
He forgives and pardons a group
and dyes his weapons with the blood of others.
And from others his sword is bloodied
وَيَجعَلُand he makes هاماتِthe heads of أَعدائِهِhis enemies
قَلانِسَcaps يُلبِسُهُنَّhe clothes with them الرِماحاthe spears
And he makes his enemies' heads
He makes the plumes of his enemies' helmets
caps that he makes the spears wear.
Spearheads that adorn the spears
وَكَاللَيثِand like a lion شَدَّhe charged عَلىupon قِرنِهِhis rival
وَكَالغَيثِand like rain جادَhe gave generously وَكَالبَدرِand like the full moon لاحاhe shone
And like a lion he charged his rival,
Like a lion he fiercely attacks their horns
and like rain he gave generously, and like the full moon he shone.
Like rain he flowed generously like the shining moon
فَرَدَّso he restored عَلىto المُلكِkingship أَسلابَهُits plundered possessions
وَأَلبَسَهُand clothed it in تاجَهُits crown وَالوِشاحاand the sash
So he restored to kingship its plundered possessions,
He restored the rule to its former state
and clothed it in its crown and sash.
Dressing it with its crown and turban
وَأَحسَنَand excelled فيin البَذلِgiving وَالإِمتِناعِand withholding
وَراشَand feathered قِداحاًarrow-shafts وَعَزَّand was hard اِقتِداحاto strike sparks from
And he excelled in giving and withholding,
Excelling in generosity and restraint
and feathered arrow-shafts, yet was hard to strike sparks from.
Proffering cups and excelling in toasting
وَكَمand how often جاوَزَhe exceeded الحَقَّwhat was due فيfor مُشرَفٍone hoping for gifts
فَعُدَّso he was deemed شَحيحاًa miser وَبارىand rivaled الرِياحاthe winds
And how often he exceeded what was due to one hoping for gifts,
How often he exceeds what is right for an eminent man
yet was deemed a miser, though he rivaled the winds.
And is deemed stingy as the winds blow
وَقَدand indeed طالَhas lasted long شَوقيmy longing إِلىfor وَجهِهِhis face
وَضاقَand grew constrained بِسِرِّيَby my secret صَبريmy patience فَباحاso it divulged it
And long has my longing for his face endured,
My longing for his face has been prolonged
and my patience could not contain my secret, so it divulged it.
And my patience with my secret has narrowed, thus it flowed
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَمُنتَظِرٌam surely awaiting رَأيَهُhis decision
كَماjust as اِنتَظَرَawaited العاشِقونَthe lovers الصَباحاthe dawn
And I am surely awaiting his decision,
I await his opinion
as lovers have awaited the dawn.
As the lovers await the dawn
