Give us a gift, or promise us one.
Provide us with attainment or promise us,
We have indeed told you the truth, so do not lie to us.
We have been truthful to you, so do not lie to us,

Tell me how I can find solace, even though I have not
Tell me how I can be tranquil when all I have seen is a sigh or a moan,
Seen anything but a sigh or a groan.

And kill me like those whom you kill.

What sin of the lovers is in you?
What sin have lovers committed in loving you?

O Commander of the Faithful, in whom hope is placed,
God has settled the eyes on you,
God has indeed gladdened eyes through you.
And we have been called to your allegiance in truth,

فَسَعَينا نَحوَها مُسرِعينا
And we were called to pledge rightful allegiance to you,
So we have hastened towards it eagerly,
So we made our way toward it in haste,
With souls that have hoped for you for a time,

With souls that had hoped for you for some time;
Our hands preceded obediently,
They preceded our hands, while we willingly obeyed.

We have not found anyone like you among both worlds,
We have found none like you in all the worlds.

That had been torn apart among other folk.

And spread security for the fearful,
And spread out safety for the fearful.

And fenced the people off from every aggressor,
With swords and spears that have watered us,
With swords and spears whose thirst we have already quenched.

One of their own gathered them in the chamber of resolve—
The head of righteousness rules the world and religion,
A righteous leader who governed worldly life and faith.

A ring of sovereignty has settled in your palm;
The caliphate fashioned it for you at one time,
For you the caliphate once fashioned it.

Not seeing anyone like you among those wearing clothes,
Seeing none like you among its wearers.
