He appeared—what is a bough beside that bough?

And what is night's full moon beside that full moon in beauty?

And I struggled against my love awhile, then could not withstand

its advance guards in glances, tears, and grief.

    وَقالَت أَعِنّي بِاِحتِيالِكَ أَو دَعني

    And my reason rebuked my soul over him, but it did not desist;

and it said, “Help me with your ingenuity, or leave me alone.”

May the caliphate bring you joy, Commander of the Faithful,

that came to you on the birds of happiness and good fortune.

And when she placed her reins in your hands,

you spread a wing of safety over the world.

Indeed, Qasim's counsel led her, in her jewels, as a bride

to a king like the full moon, in the first bloom of youth.

Nor did he deny the right to the one entitled to it,

and he carried out God's decree concerning a father and a son.

Is there no one to mention me before the finest caliph,

lavish in gifts, boundless in bounty and beneficence?

I sit with him only in slumber's dreams,

while at evening my reward draws back from me.

And I was summoned on Thursday for a robe of honor,

and returned at night, the robe still empty of me.

So, O bounty of his hands, erase the traces of his severity,

for he owes compensation for my detention, though I did no wrong.
