Gray hair must show, even if concealed.
Pardon my head and this gray hair of mine, though dyed.

Youth has passed, and I once knew it;
God set patience in its place when it departed.

Were it not for wine and drinking companions in eloquent conversation,
I would have bidden pleasures farewell after it, seeking divine reward.

Do not give it water; leave it as it was left.
For it had water enough when it came forth as grapes.

The bride of Daskara, her crowns are pearls;
She has nursed herself in her wine jar for ages.

Until you are beloved again, after they grew displeased
With you—your hair-partings—as you crave waywardness and play.

And how will you be when he comes round carrying it—
A gazelle who gives you the cup's remainder if he drinks?

And his shoulders are draped in a kerchief;
He scowls from hauteur, though he is not angry.

كَأَنَّهُas though he إِذwhen حَساهاsipped it نافِخٌwere blowing لَهَباflame
And clear wine circulates among the companions beneath him,
As though, when he sipped it, he were blowing flame.

Can you see yourself turning away from this one and forsaking him?
Whoever says I love anyone but you has lied.
