جِسمُbody المُحِبِّthe lover بِثَوبِin the robe of السَقمِsickness مُشتَمِلُwrapped
وَجَفنُهُand his eyelid بِدُموعِwith tears of الشَوقِlonging مُكتَحِلُlined with kohl
The lover's body is wrapped in the robe of sickness,
And his eyelid is kohled with tears of longing.
وَكَيفَand how يَبقىlive on عَلىin ذاthis state مُدنَفٌgravely ill كَمِدٌgrief-stricken
لَمnot يَبقَremains مِنof صَبرِهِhis patience رَسمٌa trace وَلاnor طَلَلُa ruin
And how can one gravely ill and grief-stricken live on like this,
When neither trace nor ruin of his patience remains?
وَظَلَّand persisted عُذّالُهُhis reproachers لاmay … not كانَexist عُذَّلُهُhis reproachers
لَوif يَعلَمونَthey knew الَّذيwhat أَلقىI endure لِماwould not عَذَلواthey reproached
And his reproachers persisted—may his reproachers be no more!
If they knew what I endure, they would not reproach me.
