I sobered up—but after what infatuations!

So ask no youthful passion of me, and leave me be.

And my gray hairs crept in, one upon another,

And drove me from hearts and eyes.

So I attend pleasures only belatedly,

And I have seen no one without an oath.

And I was left alone, save for a grinning companion,

Quick to spark with recklessness, untrustworthy.

And a wine-selling woman who calls Christ her Lord,

I visited by night, while dawn's light was not yet clear.

So when she saw me, she knew me for a much-reproached man,

Whose wealth does not last long, no miser.

So she brought it, golden, in its cup,

    With eyes unjoined to eyelids.

As though we, while dawn's light hastened darkness away,

Were setting a crow with black flight feathers flying.

So I kept being served it by the hand of a tunic-clad man,

Like a branch the wind had bent among branches.

He curled his sidelock like the letter nūn from beneath a forelock,

Musk-scented, glorying in the ivory of his brow.
