وَفِتيانٍand young men غَدَواset out early وَالليلُwhile the night داجٍdark
وَفِتيانٍ غَدَوا وَالليلُ داجٍ
وَضَوءُand the light الصُبحِof dawn مُتَّهَمُuncertain in الوُرودِarrival
وَضَوءُ الصُبحِ مُتَّهَمُ الوُرودِ
And young men set out early while the night was dark,
And the coming of dawn’s light was still uncertain.
كَأَنَّas though بُزاتَهُمtheir hawks أُمَراءُcommanders جَيشٍof an army
كَأَنَّ بُزاتَهُم أُمَراءُ جَيشٍ
عَلىupon أَكتافِهِمtheir shoulders صَدَءُrust الحَديدِof iron
عَلى أَكتافِهِم صَدَءُ الحَديدِ
As though their hawks were commanders of an army,
With the rust of iron upon their shoulders.
