أَبا طَيِّبٍ خُبِّرتُ أَنَّكَ بَعدَنا

أَبا طَيِّبٍ خُبِّرتُ أَنَّكَ بَعدَنا

وَقَفتَ عَلى القَشّاشِ فيما يُقَشِّشُ

وَقَفتَ عَلى القَشّاشِ فيما يُقَشِّشُ

O Abu Tayyib, I was told that, after we left,

you stopped by the scavenger as he scavenged.

عَجوزٌ كَأَنَّ الشَيبَ تَحتَ قِناعِها

عَجوزٌ كَأَنَّ الشَيبَ تَحتَ قِناعِها

عَلى الرَأسِ وَالأَكتافِ قُطنٌ مُنَفَّشُ

عَلى الرَأسِ وَالأَكتافِ قُطنٌ مُنَفَّشُ

An old woman—as though the grey hair beneath her veil

on her head and shoulders were fluffed-up cotton.

خَبيثَةُ ريحِ الريقِ تَحسَبُ هُدهُداً

خَبيثَةُ ريحِ الريقِ تَحسَبُ هُدهُداً

يَبيضُ بِفيها ثاوِياً وَيُعَشِّشُ

يَبيضُ بِفيها ثاوِياً وَيُعَشِّشُ

Her saliva smells foul—you would think a hoopoe

was laying eggs in her mouth, dwelling there and nesting.

وَما زِلتُ حَتّى صادَكَ اليَومَ عِندَها

وَما زِلتُ حَتّى صادَكَ اليَومَ عِندَها

فَكَم صامِتٍ مِنهُم وَآخَرَ يَبطِشُ

فَكَم صامِتٍ مِنهُم وَآخَرَ يَبطِشُ

And I did not stop until he caught you at her place today:

so many of them silent, and another lashing out!

وَكَم قائِلٍ هَذا النُمَيري فَأَقبَلوا

وَكَم قائِلٍ هَذا النُمَيري فَأَقبَلوا

وَكَم قائِلٍ هَذا النَبيُّ المُجَمَّشُ

وَكَم قائِلٍ هَذا النَبيُّ المُجَمَّشُ

And how many said, “This is al-Numayri!”—so they came forward;

and how many said, “This is the fondled prophet!”

وَقَد نَصَحوا مِن قَبلِ ذَلِكَ زَوجَها

وَقَد نَصَحوا مِن قَبلِ ذَلِكَ زَوجَها

فَقالَ لَهُم وَجهُ المُحَرِّشِ أَحرَشُ

فَقالَ لَهُم وَجهُ المُحَرِّشِ أَحرَشُ

And they had already advised her husband before that,

so he told them, “The instigator’s face is rougher.”
