مَنwho يَشتَريwill buy مَشيبيmy gray hair
بِالشَعَرِin exchange for hair الغِربيبِraven-black
Who will buy my gray hair
For raven-black hair?
مَنwho يَشتَريwill buy مَشيبيmy gray hair
وَلَيسَand he is not بِالمُصيبِright in his choice
Who will buy my gray hair,
Though he would not be choosing wisely—
نورَthe light of الرُؤوسِheads وَاللِحىand beards
وَظُلمَةَand the darkness of القُلوبِhearts
The light of heads and beards,
And the darkness of hearts?
أَينَwhere are الغَوانيthe beautiful women وَالصِباand youth
وَالعُذرُand the excuse فيfor الذُنوبِsins
Where are the beautiful women and youth,
And the excuse for sins?
هَيهاتَalas, how distant! لَيسَis not شَيبيmy gray hair
مِنfrom ذاكَthat بِالغَريبِa stranger
Alas! My gray hair is not
A stranger to that.
قَدoften أَغتَديI set out at dawn بِقارِحٍon a full-grown horse
Often I would ride out at dawn on a full-grown steed,
Well-marked and fleet,
يَنفيhe scatters الحَصىthe pebbles بِحافِرٍwith a hoof
كَالقَدَحِlike a cup المَكبوبِoverturned
Scattering pebbles with a hoof
Like an overturned cup.
وَضَحِكَتand smiled غُرَّتُهُhis white forehead-blaze
فيin مَوضِعِthe place of التَقطيبِfrowning
And his white blaze smiled
In the place of a frown.
إِذاwhen غَدَتset out at dawn أَربَعَةٌfour
لِقَنصِهاfor their quarry المَطلوبِsought-after
When four set out at dawn
For the quarry they sought,
لَمdid not يَنقَطِعsubside غُبارُهاtheir dust
Their dust would not settle
Before blood was spilled.
