لَكِنbut أَساءَtreated badly بِهاtoward it الزَمانِtime صَنيعاin its treatment
I recognize the dwelling, its hills and camping grounds,
But time has dealt harshly with it.

It has worn the wind's trailing skirts, which efface its traces,
And the summer and spring of a year gone by.
وَبَكَيتُand I wept مِنbecause of طَرَبِthe impassioned singing of الحَمائِمِthe doves غُدوَةًat dawn

And at dawn I wept at the doves' impassioned cries;
They called to the cock-dove, yet found none to hear.

وَغَلَبتُهُنَّand I outdid them تَفَجُّعاًin anguish وَدُموعاand tears
You joined them in wailing and anguish,
And I outdid them in anguish and tears.

فَاِحزَنso mourn فَلَستَfor you are not بِمِثلِهِlike it مَفجوعاstricken
An aching heart's cares have exhausted consolation;
So mourn, for you are not stricken as it is.

The white gazelles of the dunes have spurned you and severed
The cord of love, and withdrawn utterly from you.

Indeed, we raid our foes, even if they are far away,
And in hosts we shake the entrails of the land.

And upon thrones and pulpits we utter
Marvels of speech, apt and original.

جَرّواthey drag الحَديدَiron أَزِجَّةًspear-butt spikes وَدُروعاand coats of mail
A people who, when angered against their enemies,
Drag iron—spear-butt spikes and coats of mail—
حَتّىuntil يُفارِقَpart from هامُهُمtheir heads أَجسامَهُمtheir bodies

Until their heads part from their bodies,
With blows that make a spring of blood gush forth.
وَكَأَنَّand as though أَيديناour hands تُنَفِّرُscare away عَنهُمُfrom them

And it is as though our hands were scaring away from them
Birds that had been perched upon their bodies.
وَإِذاand when الخُطوبُcalamities أَتَينَthey come upon مِنّاfrom among us مُطرِقاًone with lowered gaze

And when calamities come upon one of us, head bowed,
They recoil upon their heels, retreating.
وَسَقَيتُand I watered بِالجودِwith generosity الفَقيرَthe poor man وَذاand the possessor of الغِنىwealth
وَالغَيثُand rain يَسقيwaters مُجدِباًbarren land وَمُريعاand fertile land
And with bounty I have watered the poor and the rich,
And rain waters barren land and fertile alike.

And whenever you wish, in war you will find one looked to with hope,
One of us, obeyed among men and followed.

بِبَياضِby the whiteness of غُرَّةِthe blaze on وَجهِهِits face مَصدوعاcleft
A noble steed gallops bearing him, its forehead seeming
Cleft by the whiteness of the blaze upon its face.
وَكَأَنَّand as though حَدَّthe edge of سِنانِهِhis spearhead مِنfrom عَزمِهِhis resolve

And it is as though his spearhead's edge were made of his resolve:
The one and the other press forward together.
يُخفيhe conceals مَكيدَتَهُhis stratagem وَيَحسُبُand he reckons رَأيَهُhis judgment

He hides his stratagem and reckons his own judgment—
Though he is the one who deceived mankind—to be deceived.

And they are the chiefs of men, none besides them,
And the noblest in roots and branches.

وَالشَمسُand the sun لاnot تُخفىis hidden عَلَيكَfrom you طُلوعاwhen rising
Never set others equal to them, for that is their due;
And the sun is not hidden from you when it rises.

And when intercessors set out in the morning for tardy bounty,
That has worn out a needy man, left empty-handed,
سَبَقَoutstripped المَواعِدَpromises وَالمِطالَand delay عَطاهُمُtheir giving

Their gifts outstrip promises and delay,
And the petitioners' hopes are swiftly fulfilled.

O you who hope to gain your end through intercession,
You have enslaved yourself to both benefactor and intercessor.
