مُدَلَّلٍpampered فيin النَعيمِluxurious ease مَغموسِimmersed
Drink a cup from Tawus's palm,
Drink from a cup in the hands of a pampered peacock
Pampered, immersed in luxurious ease.
Immersed in luxury, soaked in bliss
طالَgrew long وُقوفيmy standing عَلَيهِby him مُنتَظِراًwaiting
لِمَوعِدٍfor a promised meeting فيin المِطالِprocrastination مَحبوسِheld captive
Long have I stood by him, waiting,
Long have I stood waiting for him
For a promised meeting held captive in delay.
For a tryst imprisoned in promises
ماnothing فيin يَديmy hand مِنهُfrom him غَيرُexcept عَضُّbiting يَديmy hand
وَرُبَّand many a بَختٍfortune فيin الحُبِّlove مَنحوسِill-starred
All I have from him is the biting of my own hand.
In my hands I have nothing of him but the grasp of my hands
And many a fortune in love is ill-starred.
And perhaps in love, many fortunes are ill-omened
لَمdid not تَخلُbe empty فيat خَصرِهِhis waist مَناطِقُهُhis girdles
مِنof جَذبِdrawing سَيفٍa sword وَحَملِand carrying دَبوسِa mace
The girdles at his waist have never lacked
His waist did not lack belts
A sword to draw and a mace to carry.
From drawing swords and carrying daggers
ظَبيٌa gazelle يَرىsees طَرفَهُhis gaze فَيَرجُمُهُand then stones him
وَهوَand he is سِوىapart from ذاكَthat لَيثُa lion عِرّيسِa lair
A gazelle whose gaze stones whoever sees it,
A gazelle who sees its glance so stones it
Yet otherwise he is a lion in its lair.
Yet he is a fierce, unbroken lion
لاnot يَطمَعُhopes الصَبُّthe lovesick lover فيهِwith him فيfor دَرَكٍattainment
وَلَوeven if حَباهُhe bestowed on him بِعَرشِthe throne of بَلقيسِBilqis
The lovesick lover has no hope of winning him,
The young man cannot hope to gain him
Even if he gave him the throne of Bilqis.
Even if granted the throne of Bilqis
ياO رَبِّmy Lord عَجِّلhasten مِمّاfrom what تَرىYou see فَرَجيmy relief
وَاِقضِand decree لِكَربيfor my anguish مِنهُfrom him بِتَنفيسِwith relief
O my Lord, hasten my relief from what You see,
O Lord, hasten what relief You see fit
And grant relief for my anguish over him.
And relieve my distress with solace
وَكَمand how long وَحَتّىand until أَهيمُI wander مِنfrom وَلَهٍlovesick longing
كَذيlike one with جُنونِmadness الخَبالِderangement مَمسوسِpossessed
And how long—until when—shall I wander in lovesick longing,
How long will I rave confused
Like one possessed, afflicted with delirious madness?
Like one insane, possessed
