    Did you not know what parting did

    That evening when the tribe set out in earnest?

    Yes, he died of anguish, and left

    His heart to be driven along with the departing camel litters.

    كَذاكَ يُميتُ بِالخَوفِ الفُراقُ

    And nothing afflicts him except this;

    Thus does parting kill through fear.

    And I do not know, now that they have urged the mounts onward,

    Whether lightning bears Shurr, or Buraq.

    How often the reins were drawn back to check a wild gallop,

    And tears of unbearable grief were held back.
