My greeting is not for dwellings in the barren wastes,
Peace—not to dwellings in the wastelands,
nor for the blackened remnant of a campsite, weathered and effaced.
nor to the remains of an abode, altered and effaced.

As long as I live, I have bestowed my greeting on an assembly
I have bestowed my greeting, as long as I live, on a gathering place
atop Bistam’s palace—the prince of assemblies—
atop Bistam's palace—a prince among gathering places—

overlooking a lovely garden, as though it were
green forelocks spread above the couches of brides.
green forelocks upon brides' beds.
وَكَمand how many فيهِin it مِنof قُمريِّa turtledove عودٍa lute مُغَرَّدٍmade to sing

Many a seasoned turtledove sings there,
And many a singing turtledove of the lute is there,
and many a drinker bends to his cup, holding nothing back;
and many a drinker at his cup, never holding back.
وَكَمand how many فيهِin it مِنof حَيٍّa bashful person مَليحٍhandsome مُراسِلٍsending messages

many a handsome, lively youth is there, sending messages
And many a bashful, handsome one is there, sending messages
with his eyes as you please, never bargaining—
with his eyes, in whatever you wish, without haggling;

bold before his watchers and jealous guardian,
bold toward his watchers and the one jealous over him,
smiling upon his beloved ones, never scowling.
laughing readily with his loved ones, never frowning.

From him I took as provision a glance obedient to me,
I took from him as sustenance a glance that yielded to me,
and it freed my heart from the discourse of whispering doubts.
which relieved my heart of the chatter of misgivings.

He passes among us a Babylonian wine,
He passes Babylonian wine around among us,
long aged by a dehqān of Persia.
which a landowner of Persia had long kept in storage.

Whenever it leaves its vat, it exchanges that vessel for
When it leaves its wine jar, it takes in its place
a shirt of glass—the finest of all garments.
a shirt of glass, out of all garments.

It grew so limpid that the eye wept, unable to discern it,
It grew clear; the eye wept, unable to discern it,
and returned exhausted, with the disappointment of one in despair.
and returns exhausted, with the disappointment of one in despair.

Whatever the eye attained from it came from the eye itself—like one claiming
And whatever it has grasped of it, it is, regarding that, like one claiming
the truths of an obscure matter by means of precious rarities.
the truths of a matter immersed in precious things.
