Come, pour it for me; dawn has already walked through the darkness—

wine red as fire, a draught that makes one shiver.

Then he handed me a cup that lit his fingertips,

    gushing rubies and hollow pearls.

    فَخُلتُ سَناها بارِقاً مُتَكَثِّفا

    And when we let it taste the mixing water, it flared up;

so I thought its radiance a dense flash of lightning.

A young gazelle of humankind goes round with it,

shifting a languishing gaze, wanton in its glances,

well versed in lovers' glances, adept

at greeting with his eyes whenever he grew afraid.

So he kept whispering to me and shifting his gaze,

more sweetly and subtly than the whispers of wishes.

And he turns love's secrets away from their enemies,

and with them meets their eager receiver, out of love for them.
