بِضارِياتٍwith trained hunters مِنof بُزاةٍhawks بُرشِspeckled
Rise, my companion; let us go at dawn against the host of wild beasts,
with trained hunters—speckled hawks,
كَأَنَّماas though نَقَّطَهاhad dotted them مُوَشّيan embroiderer
وَنَيرَجاتٍand hunting hounds ضُمَّرٍlean تَستَنشيsniffing the air
as though an embroiderer had dotted them—
and lean hunting hounds sniffing the air,
وَوابِلٍand a downpour فيin العَدوِrunning غَيرِnot طَشِّdrizzle
ماnot اِستَأثَرَتthey claimed exclusively مِنto دونِناour exclusion بِخَدشِeven a scratch
and a downpour of speed, no mere drizzle.
They never claimed even a scratch to our exclusion
لِصَيدِهاupon their quarry وَهيَthough they are شِدادُmighty in البَطشِgrasping
فَقامَso he rose نَحوَهاtoward them بِوَجهٍwith a face بَشِّcheerful
upon their quarry, though mighty in their grip.
So he rose toward them, his face beaming
كَمِثلِjust like دينارٍa dinar جَديدِfresh in النَقشِthe stamping
وَاِستَبدَلَand he took instead السَرجَthe saddle بِلينِin place of the softness of الفُرشِbedding
like a newly struck dinar,
and traded soft bedding for the saddle
لَمّاwhen رَأىhe saw فيin اللَيلِthe night فَجراًdawn يَمشيwalking
فَكَمand how many كِناسٍa gazelle's lair قَدindeed خَلاlay empty وَعُشِّand a nest
when he saw dawn walking through the night.
And how many lairs and nests lay empty!
وَقَهوَةٍand wine صِرفٍundiluted بِغَيرِwithout غِشِّadulteration
تَفُشُّit unlocks قُفلَthe lock of الهَمِّsorrow أَيَّwhat an فَشِّunlocking
And wine, undiluted, without adulteration,
that throws sorrow's lock wide open—
شَرِبتُهاI drank it تَحتَbeneath نَدىًdew وَرَشِّand drizzle
فيon لَيلَةٍa night ذاتِwith نُجومٍstars عُمشِbleary-eyed
I drank it beneath dew and drizzle,
on a night of bleary-eyed stars.
