أَياO عَينِmy eye قَدindeed أَشقَيتِنيyou have made me wretched وَشَقيتِand you have suffered
أَيا عَينِ قَد أَشقَيتِني وَشَقيتِ
أَحَقّاًis it true? رَأَيتِyou saw المَوتَdeath ثُمَّthen بَقيتِyou remained alive
أَحَقّاً رَأَيتِ المَوتَ ثُمَّ بَقيتِ
O my eye, you have made me wretched and suffered yourself.
Oh eye, you have made me suffer and suffered
Did you truly see death and then live on?
Have you truly seen death and yet remained
وَياand O نَفسِmy soul إِنَّindeed العُذرَthe excuse لاno شَكَّdoubt ساعَةٌan hour
وَيا نَفسِ إِنَّ العُذرَ لا شَكَّ ساعَةٌ
تَعيشينَهاyou live it بَعدَafter الحَبيبِthe beloved فَموتيso die
تَعيشينَها بَعدَ الحَبيبِ فَموتي
And O my soul, you are surely excused for only an hour
And oh soul, there is no doubt the excuse is for an hour
Of living after the beloved—so die.
That you live after the beloved, so die
