Do not tire of our urging, you two; give us drink.

Dawn has appeared to us and shone clear.

And slay our cares with unmixed wine,

And leave Time alone: whatever it wills comes to pass.

And mix our cup with a youth’s spittle,

Sweet to the thirsty as watering place and tavern,

From a mouth in which pearls have been planted,

Whose spittle is pure when spittle betrays.

And a drinking companion—sickness had weakened his

    Languid eye and tongue—

We summoned him to the cup until

He brightened at the cupbearer and stretched out his fingers.

    ثُمَّ عَلَّقنا عَلَيهِ القِيانا

    He kept dancing, full of delight;

Then we had the singing girls cling to him.
