أَلاLo! أَيُّهاO الرَبعُthe dwelling-place الَّذيwhich عَطَّلَleft desolate الدَهرُtime
عَفاكَeffaced you بُكائيmy weeping فيكَover you لَمdid not يَعفُكَefface you القَطرُthe rain
Ah, dwelling-place that time has left desolate,
my weeping over you effaced you, not the rain.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends إِنif لَمnot تُسعِدانيyou two aid me عَلىin البُكاweeping
فَلاthen do not تُكثِراyou two multiply لَوميblaming me فَكَمfor how long يَصبِرُendures الصَبرُpatience
My two friends, if you will not join me in weeping,
do not reproach me so much—how long can patience endure?
سَقىmay water اللَهُGod شَمساًa sun بِالمُخَرَّمِin al-Mukharram دارُهاher home
يَهونُmeans little عَلَيهاto her مِنِّيَfrom me العَتبُreproach وَالهَجرُand estrangement
May God water a sun whose home is in al-Mukharram;
my reproach and estrangement mean little to her.
جَلَتهاunveiled her عَلَيناbefore us الريحُthe wind بَينَamong كَواعِبٍfull-breasted maidens
وَقَدthough already كَتَمَتهُنَّhad concealed them المَقانِعُthe head-veils وَالأُزرُand waist-wraps
The wind unveiled her before us among full-breasted maidens,
though head-veils and waist-wraps had concealed them,
فَأَبدَتand so revealed لَناto us كَشحاًa waist هَضيماًslender عَلىabove نَقاًa sand dune
وَرُمّانَand pomegranates صَدرٍof a bosom ماno لِيانِعِهِfor its ripe fruit هَصرُbending down to pluck
and so revealed to us a slender waist above a sand dune,
and a bosom's pomegranates, whose ripe fruit is unplucked.
أَبىrefused اللَهُGod إِلّاexcept كُلَّall ماthat which سَرَّgladdened أَحمَداًAhmad
وَلِلحاسِدينَand for the envious الرُغمُhumiliation وَالجَدعُand nose-cutting وَالعَثرُand stumbling
God wills nothing but what gladdens Ahmad;
and for the envious, humiliation, severed noses, and stumbling.
بِهِthrough him قَرَّتِbecame settled الدُنياthe world وَفاضَand overflowed خَراجُهاits tax revenue
عَلىupon المَلكِthe king فَاِستَغنىso he grew wealthy وَأَمكَنَهُand became possible for him القَهرُsubjugation
Through him the world found peace, and its tax revenues overflowed
upon the king, so he grew rich and gained the power to subdue.
وَلَولاهُand were it not for him دَرَّتwould have yielded milk بِالسُيوفِwith swords وَبِالقَناand with spears
لِقاحٌmilch-camels مَعَamid الهَيجاءِbattle أَطيارُهاits birds حُمرُred
But for him, milk would have been drawn with swords and spears
from milch-camels amid battle, with its birds red.
