شُخوصُdeparture وِلايَةٍgovernorship كَشُخوصِlike the departure عَزلِdismissal
عَلىamid دَهشٍbewilderment وَعِزٍّand honor مِثلَlike ذُلِّdisgrace
Setting out for office is like departing upon dismissal,
Amid bewilderment and honor akin to disgrace.
وَمَجنونٌand a madman يُخَلَّصُis set free بَعدَafter حَبسٍconfinement
وَأَقيادٍand shackles وَسِلسِلَةٍand a chain وَفُلِّand fetters
And a madman is set free after confinement,
And shackles, a chain, and fetters.
وَلَمand not تُقضَbe fulfilled الحُقوقُthe dues وَلاnor اِقتَضاهاhe claimed them
بِتَسليمٍwith a greeting وَتَوديعٍand a farewell لِخِلِّto a friend
And no dues were paid, nor did he claim them
With a greeting and a farewell to a friend.
وَلَمand not أَرَI saw قَبلَهُbefore him ريحاًa wind عَصوفاًraging
مُجَسَّمَةًgiven bodily form وَطوماراًand a scroll بِرَحلِupon a saddle
And before him I had never seen a raging wind
Made flesh, or a scroll upon a saddle.
وَأَحسَبُهاand I think it سَيَسلوهاhe will forget it سَريعاًquickly
وَيَرجَعُand he returns خائِباًdisappointed يَرغوhe bellows وَيَغليand he seethes
And I think he will soon forget it,
And return disappointed, bellowing and seething.
وَوَجهُand the face of العَزلِdismissal يَضحَكُlaughs كُلَّevery يَومٍday
وَيَطبِزُand jabs فيin قَفاthe nape of الواليthe governor المُدِلِّthe haughty one
And the face of dismissal laughs each day,
And jabs the haughty governor in the nape.
