I mourned the pilgrims, and the enemies said:

"He reviled Ali and the Prophet's household."

Would I eat my own flesh and sip my own blood?

O my people, what a most astonishing wonder!

Ali—they think I harbor hatred for him!

Why did they not suspect something other than unbelief in me?

Then may his hand give me no drink tomorrow

from the pool and the sweetest drinking-place.

I was reviled; whoever among them has blamed me,

I shall neither please nor appease him.

Dispeller of sorrows and lion of wars,

    amid the rising, most fearsome dust;

and an ocean of knowledge, and the vexation of foes—

whenever he wrestles with them, he prevails.

He rolls an eloquent tongue within his mouth,

like the throat-pouch of an unbroken camel.

And the first to remain in a place,

praying with the pure and virtuous one.

And he was a brother to the Prophet of guidance,

and singled out for that—so do not lie.

And a worthy match for the finest of mankind's women,

across the span from east to west.

And the most discerning of judges, with decisive judgment

and speech most just and sound.

And on the night of the cave he shielded the Prophet,

from nightfall until the gray-white dawn.

And he spent the night lying in the bed for his sake,

steeling his soul for the hardest trial.

And Amr son of Abd and his confederates—

he made them drink death's draught in Yathrib.

    تُخَبِّركَ عَنهُ وَعَن مَرحَبِ

    And ask Khaybar, with its fortresses, about him;

it will tell you about him and Marhab.

    فَبَخَّ لِجَدِّهِما وَالأَبِ

    And his two scions—their grandfather is Ahmad;

so, hail their grandfather and father!

And nothing is astonishing but the killing of Husayn,

thirsty, kept away from the drinking-place.

O lion who remained among the dogs,

as they tear at him, his claw bloodied!

If indeed his loss has terrified us,

and struck from where it was not expected,

and how often we have wept blood for him,

with brown spears, straightened at the joints,

and polished white swords, keen of edge—

whenever their stroke is tested, they drink.

And how many a battle-cry we have in his name,

he renews some of them against the guilty.

And how much black attire we have worn in mourning,

and hair grown long upon the shoulder,

and our lament for him in neighing,

and the clatter of bits in a troop of horsemen.

And that is little for him from the sons

of his father and his nearest kin.
