ياO مَنyou who تَبَجَّحَboasted فيin الدُنياthe world وَزُخرُفِهاand its finery
كُنbe مِنagainst صُروفِthe vicissitudes لَياليهاits nights عَلىon حَذَرِguard
O you who glory in the world and its finery,
Be on guard against the vicissitudes of its nights.
وَلاand do not يَغُرَّنكَlet it deceive you عَيشٌa life إِنif صَفاbecame clear وَعَفاand grew abundant
فَالمَرءُfor a person مِنfrom غُرَرِthe brightest parts الأَيامِthe days فيin غَرَرِperil
And let no life beguile you, though clear and abundant,
For a man is imperiled by the brightest of days.
إِنَّindeed الزَمانَTime إِذاwhen جَرَّبتَyou have tested خِلقَتَهُits nature
مُقَسَّمُdivided الأَمرِin dealings بَينَbetween الصَفوِclarity وَالكَدَرِand murk
Indeed, Time, when you have tested its nature,
Is divided in its dealings between clarity and murk.
كَمhow often قَدindeed أَغارَtwisted tight قُوىstrands حَبلٍa rope لِغادِرِهِfor its betrayer
لَمّاwhen أَغارَassailed عَلَيهِupon him واهِيَslack المِرَرِthe rope strands
How often it has tightened a rope’s strands for its betrayer,
When it assailed him with slackly twisted strands.
