Pass me the cup, you two; it is not to be forsaken.

And, O my reproacher, my infatuation is mine, and piety is yours.

Leave me to myself; may God bless you.

Is there no release from your reproach for the captive of error?

If he is not receptive to right guidance and counsel,

Then your displeasure is ignorance, and your reproach is obstinate wrangling.

    فَما عِندَهُ سَمعٌ فَهَل عِندَكُم تَركُ

    So leave alone a youth enamored of revelry and the cup;

For he will not listen; will you, then, leave him alone?

An aged wine: the admixture fashioned for its head

Wreaths of pearls, strung without a thread.

The motions of time flowed over its stillness,

So it melted like raw gold, purified by smelting.

And others obtained from it a remnant

Of vital breath in a body ravaged by exhaustion.

For its clarity has made it invisible, as though it were

Remnants of certainty almost overtaken by doubt.

And a cultured cupbearer passed it round with a tapping spike,

Like the dagger of a rogue whose trade is murder.

And the sun was returned to us, trailing its robes in the darkness,

So its light tore the veil of night.

When it settles in a heart, that heart's worries depart,

And his life grows sweet to him, and distress is quelled.

    وَلَكِنَّما مُلكُ السُرورِ هُوَ المُلكُ

    And kingship in this world is not worry and regret;

But the kingship of joy alone is true kingship.
