وَجُنودٍand troops رَمَيتُهُمI assailed them بِحَريقٍwith a blaze
يَتَلَظّىit flares إِذاwhen أَحَسَّit became aware بِريحِof a breeze
And troops I assailed with a blaze
And armies I bombarded with flames
That flares whenever it senses a breeze.
That blaze when feeling a breeze
قَرَّتِwas soothed العَينُthe eye إِذwhen رَأَتهُمit saw them سُقوطاًfalling
كَيَسارٍlike Yasār مِنَthrough الصَنيعِthe handiwork المَليحِfine
The eye rejoiced when it saw them falling,
My eyes were delighted when seeing them fall
Like Yasār, through fine handiwork.
Like well-crafted necklaces with gems
طالَماfor so long قَدalready حَمَواthey guarded عَلَيَّagainst me دِياريmy dwellings
وَنَفَونيand they banished me عَنfrom طيبِthe pleasantness of ريحِthe breeze of السُطوحِthe rooftops
Long had they guarded my dwellings against me,
Long they had invaded my home
And banished me from the rooftops’ pleasant breeze.
And expelled me from the sweet scent of roofs
