وَقالوا تَصَبَّر قُلتُ كَيفَ وَإِنَّما

وَقالوا تَصَبَّر قُلتُ كَيفَ وَإِنَّما

أُريدُ الهَوى حَتّى أَلَذَّ وَأَنعَما

أُريدُ الهَوى حَتّى أَلَذَّ وَأَنعَما

And they said, “Be patient.” I said: How, when I only

They said abstain, I said how when

Desire love so that I may take pleasure and live in bliss?

All I want is love to be sweet and blissful

وَيَأخُذُ لَحظَ العَينِ مِمَّن أُحِبُّهُ

وَيَأخُذُ لَحظَ العَينِ مِمَّن أُحِبُّهُ

شِفاءً وَأَلقى زائِراً وَمُسَلِّما

شِفاءً وَأَلقى زائِراً وَمُسَلِّما

And it takes a glance from the eye of the one I love

And to take a glance from the one I love

As a cure, and I meet him as a visitor, offering greetings.

As healing, and to find a visitor showing peace

لَو كُنتُ مِمَّن يَتَّقي الناسَ في الهَوى

لَو كُنتُ مِمَّن يَتَّقي الناسَ في الهَوى

لَكانَ تُقى رَبّي أَعَفَّ وَأَكرَما

لَكانَ تُقى رَبّي أَعَفَّ وَأَكرَما

If I were one who feared people in love,

If I were among those who avoid people in passion

Then reverence for my Lord would be more chaste and more noble.

Avoiding my Lord would be more virtuous and generous
