وَصَوتِand the voice of حَمامَةٍa dove سَجَعَتshe cooed بِلَيلٍby night
وَصَوتِ حَمامَةٍ سَجَعَت بِلَيلٍ
وَقَدand had حَنَّتshe yearned إِلىfor إِلفٍa mate بَعيدِdistant
وَقَد حَنَّت إِلى إِلفٍ بَعيدِ
And the voice of a dove that cooed by night,
The cooing of a dove lamenting in the night,
while she yearned for a distant mate—
Yearning for a long lost company,
فَماso not زِلناwe ceased نَقولُwe say لَهاto her أَعيديrepeat it
فَما زِلنا نَقولُ لَها أَعيدي
وَلِلساقيand to the cupbearer أَلاcome! (calling attention) هَلis there مِنany مَزيدِmore
وَلِلساقي أَلا هَل مِن مَزيدِ
so we kept saying to her, “Repeat it,”
Still we implore it, sing your plaint again,
and to the cupbearer, “Come, is there any more?”
And to the cupbearer - pray, give us more wine!
