وَمَقتولِand one slain سُكرٍby drunkenness عاشَcame to life ليfor me إِذwhen دَعَوتُهُI called him
وَمَقتولِ سُكرٍ عاشَ لي إِذ دَعَوتُهُ

وَبادَرَ مَسروراً يَرى غَيَّهُ رُشدا
And one slain by drunkenness came to life for me when I called him,
The slain drunkard lived when I called him,
and hastened joyfully, seeing his waywardness as right guidance.
And came to me joyfully though lost in his passion,
وَقامَand he rose بِكَفَّيهِin his two palms بَقاياthe remnants خُمارِهِof his hangover
وَقامَ بِكَفَّيهِ بَقايا خُمارِهِ
وَعَيناهُand his two eyes مِنfrom خَدَّيهِhis two cheeks قَدhad جَفَتاboth drawn back قَدّاinto slits
وَعَيناهُ مِن خَدَّيهِ قَد جَفَتا قَدّا
And he rose, the remnants of his hangover in his two palms,
And rose supporting himself on his hands, the ruins of his potion,
and his eyes had drawn back from his cheeks into slits.
While his eyes on his cheeks had long been dry.
