حِقاقُ عَقيقٍ قَد مُلِئنَ مِنَ الدُرِّ
And bitter-orange trees, as though their fruits were
The orange trees are laden as though their fruit
Caskets of agate filled with pearls.
were chrysolite stones filled full of dew.
مَطالِعُهاtheir places of emergence بَينَamong الغُصونِthe boughs كَأَنَّهاas though they were

خُدودُ عَذارى في مَلاحِفِها الخُضرِ
Emerging among the boughs, they seem like
Their blossoms peeping out from between the boughs
Maidens’ cheeks in their green mantles.
are like the blushing cheeks of virgins in their bowers of green.
أَتَتthey came كُلَّevery مُشتاقٍyearning lover بَريّاwith the fragrance of حَبيبِهِhis beloved
أَتَت كُلَّ مُشتاقٍ بَريّا حَبيبِهِ

فَهاجَت لَهُ الأَحزانَ مِن حَيثُ لا يَدري
They brought every yearning lover his beloved’s fragrance,
Each one brings to her longing lover some new delight,
So they stirred his sorrows from a source he did not know.
and stirs his heart with joy though he knows not why.
