وَزائِرٍand a visitor زارَنيvisited me عَلىin عَجَلِhaste
مُنَقَّبِveiled الوَجنَتَينِthe two cheeks بِالخَجَلِwith bashfulness
And a visitor came to me in haste,
His cheeks veiled in bashfulness.
قَدindeed كانَhe used to يَستَكثِرُconsider too much الكِتابَwriting لَناto us
فَجادَso he gave generously بِالإِعتِناقِwith embraces وَالقُبَلِand kisses
He used to think writing to us too much,
Yet he lavished embraces and kisses.
يَقودُهُleads him الشَوقُlonging خائِفاًfearful وَجِلاًapprehensive
تَحتَbeneath الدُجىthe darkness وَالعُيونُwhile the eyes فيin شَغلِpreoccupation
Longing led him, fearful and apprehensive,
Under cover of darkness, while eyes were occupied.
فَنِلتُso I gained مِنهُfrom him الَّذيwhat أُؤَمِّلُهُI hope for it
بَلِrather الَّذيwhat كانَwas دونَهُshort of it أَمَليmy hope
So I gained from him what I had hoped for—
Rather, what lay beyond my hopes.
